Rock god refers to a star musician or performer in the rock and roll music genre who has sufficient charisma and stage presence to command adulation resembling a religious fervor. These performers are generally stars credited with establishing or having a large part in establishing the rock genre. Examples include such enduring performers as Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Doors, Queen, Aerosmith, Kurt Cobain and Metallica, among others. In practice, the term may also be applied to any rock music star. A variation is the term "guitar god" referring to an unusually talented and charismatic guitar player.
[edit] Origins of the Term
Although the charisma of early rock musicians and their ability to command ardent fan bases is a well-known phenomenon, the term "rock god" seemed to originate in the late 1960s with the advent of large scale arena rock. Although The Beatles achieved superstardom without playing to huge audiences, John Lennon noticed the trend, becoming infamous in the U.S. for a statement that The Beatles were "more popular than Jesus."[1]
The next wave of rock musicians discovered a religious quality in the gatherings at Woodstock, Isle of Wight Festival and other large music venues, as such notable performers as Mick Jagger, Roger Daltrey, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Robert Plant and Steven Tyler were able to fabricate a highly unified and apparently spiritual response from the audience. Robert Plant may have coined the term in 1975. He was reported to have proclaimed "I am a Golden God!" from the balcony of the Continental Hyatt House in Los Angeles, California, an event recreated in Cameron Crowe's rock and roll film, Almost Famous.[2]
Pete Townshend investigated some of these issues in the rock opera Tommy where the protagonist, a deaf, dumb and blind boy, becomes a messianic figure through his talent, but is later attacked and deserted by his fans. Townshend continued to pursue a discussion of the religious quality of musical gathering in his opus Lifehouse, postulating a "one note" of universal unity. These ideas were influenced by the writings of philosopher Inayat Khan, a Sufi musician who had written about the connection of vibration and music with the human spirit.[3] The Moody Blues also pursued this concept with their album In Search of the Lost Chord.
[edit] Later Applications
As rock music developed as a genre, the mass cultural nature of the response became more commonplace. The spiritually directed fans of the 1960s were replaced by more violent gatherings such as Altamont where a fan was murdered by Hell's Angels at a Rolling Stones concert. The term "rock god" lost some of its luster during these years and usage was broadened to refer to older musicians that predated use of the term, and also to later stars who never achieved the stage presence of Jagger, Hendrix, Daltrey, Morrison or Plant. However, the term still carries a connotation of unusual flash and talent. _________________ Click !----->CITITI REGULAMENTUL! |
